Facing the English coast, the city of Boulogne has been
since the Romans (Emperor Claudius) a major seaport as well as a fortified place.
The Upper Town (Ville Haute) surrounded with ramparts contains the most remarkable buildings of the city :
the castle, the belfry, the basilica as well as 17th and 18th century mansions.
