The entrance to Boulogne harbour as seen from the plateau of the so-called “Tour d’ Odre”.
The plateau is named after a Roman lighthouse, probably the first one in Gaul,
built circa 40 AD by the Emperor Caligula and later restored by Charlemagne.
Judging from a 17 th century drawing preserved in the French National Library,
it was a 12-story and 65 metre-high tower also called "Caligula's Lighthouse" (Le Phare de Caligula).
It unfortunately collapsed together with part of the cliff nearby on July 29th 1644.
Nevertheless there were still ruins of that tower in the early 20th cientury (according to a photograph).
