The Watch Tower, one of the only vestiges left of Old Calais.

The 35-metre high Watch Tower was in the 13th century the centre of a castle.
In 1347 one of the local worthies, Jean de Vienne, addressed the crowd from the top of the Watch Tower, pleading with them to surrender to the English.
In 1931 the building was classified as one of historical interest (National Heritage), but for reasons of safety the Tower may not be visited.
The building was successively used as a watch tower, a lighthouse and a telephone link centre. It was miraculously spared by the heavy bombing of the area during the second World War, standing erect on its own amidst the ruins.
A market has been held at the foot of the tower since the 16th century. It now takes place on Wednesdays and Saturdays (morning only).
