The Blanc-Nez cliffs are very steep and rich in fossils
(which nevertheless should on no account be collected !)

About 50 million years ago, the ocean which covered the whole region deposited thick layers of sediment,
including chalk, before receding and leaving an isthmus between the Channel and the North Sea.
